#7 Rhode Island defeats #10 Oklahoma to advance in the 2018 NCAA Tournament

Updated: Oct 22, 2019

PITTSBURGH, PA -- Despite being the higher seeded team, coming into the tournament at #7, the Rhode Island Rams certainly felt like the underdog to the #10 Oklahoma Sooners. Headed into halftime, the Rams trailed by four, 35-31, after closing that deficit from eight points just a few minutes earlier. Midway through the second, Rhode Island took the lead, if only briefly. The teams traded leads until the Rams pulled ahead by as many as seven points.

But the Sooners came back to tie the game, with the Rams unable to convert as time expired, sending the first game of the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament to overtime.

In overtime, it was the Sooners who struck first on two free throws. But the Rams wouldn't be denied, and fought back to take the win, 83-78. They'll face Duke on Saturday, March 17 in the second round.
